Our little Jordan is so special to us. We have just been through a wild and crazy ride with a doggy disease and I would like to share his story in hopes of protecting other furkids.
Now, we all know that most dogs don't like to go to the vet. Imagine what Jordan was thinking when his mommy took him to the dreaded "V" place weekly for about four months? I only wish I could explain to him that I was doing this because I love him and want him to be healthy. Instead, he looked at me with those cute little puppy dog eyes and asked, "Why are you doing this to me?"
This all started back in the summer of 2000. The ticks around here were horrible. We tried to keep them off the boys with Frontline, but this didn't seem to be enough. We finally got the tick problem under control, but little did we know..it was too late. Jordan developed a sore on his side. I took him in and they told me that it was a tick bite that was a little infected and that with a little ointment he would be fine.
After a few months of what seemed to be a normal little guy, it was time for their grooming. When I picked them up, I was alarmed. First, I want to point out that the groomer did nothing wrong. No one really knows for sure what happened, but we think that the brush caused a tiny scratch on his side near his leg. Within hours this sore turned into a horrible wound....and the previous tick bite had even resurfaced again. I took him back to the vet. They performed several tests, including a blood test on him and realized he had contracted Ehrlichia from an infected tick.
The next few months would be a time that Jordan needed a lot of attention. Both sores grew in size and became solid scabs. Each scar was roughly two inches by three inches and only a few inches apart. Weekly, Jordan was taken to the vet for them to cut away the edges of the scab that had loosened itself from the sore. Finally, both scabs had fallen off and the marks that were left are very noticeable. The vet said that since Jordan has long hair, it should grow long enough to cover most of the scar areas, but he will never have hair there again.
I want to share Jordan's story so that other people who love their furkids will be aware of this horrible disease and do everything possible to keep it from happening to their pet. |
